Image-Guided Breast Biopsy Services
We are in the business of helping others. We offer high-quality imaging services with state-of-the-art
technology. Most importantly, your results will be given to you before you leave our office.
Ultrasound-
Guided Biopsy
An ultrasound-guided biopsy is recommended
by the radiologist when there is an abnormal
finding in your breast imaging. The area of
concern is located with ultrasound. A small
sample of tissue is collected and sent to a
pathologist. The pathologist will look at the
tissue under a microscope to evaluate the
cells for abnormalities, like breast cancer, that
would require further treatment.
You will be escorted to our ultrasound biopsy
suite by a sonographer who will review some
information and have you change into a gown
before beginning the procedure. The
sonographer will locate and take pictures of
the area of concern with ultrasound. The
radiologist will then clean the skin overlying
the area with an alcohol solution.
Under real time ultrasound the radiologist
numbs the skin and soft tissues leading up to
the area with a numbing agent. This may
stick and sting for just a moment while the
numbing goes into effect. A hollow needle is
guided to the area and a small amount of
tissue is collected. A biopsy marker, made of
carbon and smaller than a grain of rice, is
placed at the biopsy site. The biopsy marker
is inert and will not affect MRI, metal
detectors, etc. The radiologist or assistant
will hold pressure over the area for five
minutes to reduce bleeding and the incision is
closed. A post procedure mammogram is
performed to document the biopsy marker
placement. Although you may be in the office
for up to an hour, the actual procedure time
is around 15 minutes.
Keep the area dry for the first 24 hours. You may shower normally after that but refrain from soaking
the area in baths or pools for 5 days. Limit activities such as lifting or exercising and wear a tighter
fitting bra, like a sports bra, for the first 24 hours. Your biopsy site may be sore for the next 24-48
hours. Icing the breast as well as taking over the counter pain relievers as instructed will help control
the discomfort. Most women find they can return to work the same day after their biopsy exam.
A stereotactic biopsy is recommended by the radiologist when there is an abnormal finding, such as
irregular calcifications, on your mammogram. The abnormality is located with mammography in order
to collect a sample of the breast tissue. The tissue is then sent to a pathologist that looks at the
sample under a microscope to evaluate for abnormal cells, like breast cancer, that would require
further treatment.
You will be escorted into our stereotactic biopsy suite. A special mammography unit uses a series of x-
rays to pinpoint the exact location of the breast abnormality. The radiologist will clean the skin
overlying the area and numb the skin and soft tissues leading up to the area of interest. A hollow
needle is guided to the area and a small amount of tissue is collected. A biopsy marker, made of
carbon and smaller than a grain of rice, is placed at the biopsy site. The biopsy marker is inert and will
not affect MRI, metal detectors, etc. The radiologist or assistant will hold pressure over the area for
five minutes to reduce bleeding and the incision is closed. A post procedure mammogram is
performed to document the biopsy marker placement.
The results of the biopsy may take up to a week. A consultation appointment is scheduled one week
after your biopsy exam in order to have time with the radiologist to review all results in detail and
address questions and concerns with you.

A bone density scan, or DEXA scan, is a simple,
non-invasive and painless exam used to
measure bone mass in areas such as your
spine, hip, and wrist and is used to detect
osteoporosis.

A mammogram is a specific type of breast
imaging that uses low-dose x-rays to detect
cancer early and when it is most treatable. At
Imaging for Women, Tomographic, or 3D
mammograms are the standard of care for all
of our patients.
Ultrasound uses sound waves to view structures
within the body in real time. Complete
evaluation, recommendations, and results are
discussed with you by our radiologists before
you leave the office. The report of your exam is
issued to your healthcare provider typically
within one hour of your exam.
