Whole breast ultrasound is a supplementary
screening technique that uses ultrasound to
find small cancers in women with dense
breast tissue. This is important because
women with denser breast tissue have 4-6
times the risk of breast cancer. It is also more
difficult to detect early cancer in dense breast
tissue. Whole breast ultrasound has been
shown to detect cancers in an additional 3 per
1,000 women with dense tissue.
If you have dense breast tissue, Imaging for
Women recommends scheduling your whole
breast ultrasound and screening
mammogram on the same day once a year.
Whole breast ultrasound exams must be
ordred by your health care provider.
Complete evaluation, recommendations, and
results are discussed with you by our
radiologists or their assistants before you
leave the office. The report of your exam is
issued to your healthcare provider typically
within one hour of your exam.
Ultrasound uses sound waves to view structures within the body in real time. Ultrasound is a
diagnostic exam and must be ordered by your health care provider. Complete evaluation,
recommendations, and results are discussed with you by our radiologists before you leave the office.
The report of your exam is issued to your healthcare provider typically within one hour of your exam.
Other ultrasounds provided at Imaging for
Women include thyroid, renal, soft tissue, carotid,
and venous doppler.
Diagnostic
Breast
Ultrasound
Ultrasound imaging of the breast uses sound waves to
produce pictures of the internal structures of the breast.
This tool is primarily used to help diagnose breast lumps
and abnormalities seen on mammography. Breast
ultrasound is a diagnostic exam and must be ordered by
your health care provider. A specially trained sonographer
uses gel and a small probe called a transducer to capture
real time images of the breast. Breast ultrasound is safe,
painless, and requires no special preparation. Complete
evaluation, recommendations, and results are discussed
with you by our radiologists or their assistants before you
leave the office. The report of your exam is issued to your
healthcare provider typically within one hour of your exam.
An abdominal ultrasound evaluates
structures such as the kidneys, liver,
gallbladder, pancreas, and spleen, inside
the abdomen. Please do not eat after
midnight if you have a morning
appointment. If you have an afternoon
appointment, nothing to eat or drink 4
hours before the exam. Sips of water to
take medicine is okay.
Imaging for Women performs both
diagnostic and 20-week anatomy screening
obstetrical ultrasounds. You will be given
the appropriate preparation for your exam
when scheduling the appointment.
Sonohystogram, or SHG, uses sound waves
to produce pictures of the inside of the
uterus. This exam is performed similar to a
gynecologic exam and involves the insertion
of the transducer into the vagina. Using a
small tube inserted into the vagina, the
doctor will inject a small amount of sterile
saline into the cavity of the uterus and
study the lining of the uterus using the
ultrasound transducer. Sonohystogram are
performed one week after menstruation to
avoid the risk of infection. It may be helpful
to take an over-the-counter pain reliever as
discomfort similar to menstrual cramping is
common after the exam.
Pelvic and transvaginal ultrasounds are
diagnostic exams used to evaluate
structures within the pelvis, including the
uterus, cervix, vagina, fallopian tubes and
ovaries. For a pelvic ultrasound, please
drink 32 oz of water one hour prior to your
appointment time. There is no special
preparation for a transvaginal ultrasound.

A bone density scan, or DEXA scan, is a simple,
non-invasive and painless exam used to

spine, hip, and wrist and is used to detect
osteoporosis.

question about Mammography, Ultrasounds,
Bone Density, Biopsies or Billing and Insurance
questions can be answered here too.
The results of the biopsy may take up to a
week. A consultation appointment is
scheduled one week after your biopsy exam in
order to have time with the radiologist to
review all results in detail and address
questions and concerns with you.
A mammogram is a specific type of breast
imaging that uses low-dose x-rays to detect
cancer early and when it is most treatable. At
Imaging for Women, Tomographic, or 3D
mammograms are the standard of care for all
of our patients.
